What to Bring to a Gem Show: A Jewelry Maker’s Essential Packing List
If you’re planning to attend a gem show—whether it’s the world-famous Tucson Gem Show or a smaller local event—preparation is key. As a silversmith and jewelry designer, I’ve attended my fair share of gem shows, and over the years I’ve learned exactly what to bring so your shopping trip is productive, efficient, and stress-free. In this post, I’m sharing my personal must-have items, budgeting tips, and a few extra essentials that will make your gem show experience a breeze.
Must-Bring Tools for Organizing Your Gem Show Finds
1. Index Cards and Double-Sided Tape
One of my favorite ways to organize stones is by using index cards with double-sided tape. Simply attach your stones to the cards, and jot down the stone type, supplier, and cost while it’s fresh in your mind. This system makes it so much easier to sort, compare, and make informed purchases during the show—or while reviewing your finds back at your hotel or studio.
2. Small Ziplock Bags
Pack a variety of small bags to store individual stones. Not only does this prevent damage, but it also keeps your collection organized and ready for use when you get back to your studio.
3. Sharpie Markers
A permanent marker is a must for labeling small Ziplock bags with stone type and cost. Keeping your stones clearly marked ensures you won’t get confused when you have multiple bags of similar-looking stones.
4. Scale
Many gem shows sell stones by weight (per carat), and while most vendors have scales at checkout, bringing your own portable scale helps you estimate costs ahead of time. This is especially helpful if you’re sticking to a budget.
5. Budget and Shopping List
Before you go, set a clear budget and make a shopping list. Knowing what you need and what you’re willing to spend will help you resist impulse purchases and ensure you walk away with the stones you truly want.
Personal Essentials for a Comfortable Gem Show Experience
1. Snacks: Long days walking through aisles of beautiful gems can leave you hungry—and hangry. Pack healthy snacks to keep your energy up without slowing you down.
2. Good Shoes: Seriously. Gem shows involve hours of walking and standing, often on hard floors. Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable.
3. Comfortable Backpack: A hands-free bag is a lifesaver. You’ll be bending over tables, comparing stones, and jotting notes, so you don’t want to juggle a purse or shopping bags. A backpack keeps your finds secure and leaves your hands free for shopping.
4. Water Bottle: Hydration is key. Choose a bottle that fits easily in your backpack without leaking, so you can sip throughout the day without worrying about spills on your stones.
Why These Items Make a Difference
Gem shows can be overwhelming, especially large events like Tucson. By preparing ahead of time, you:
Stay organized: Avoid confusion with labels and cards.
Shop smarter: Know your budget and stone weights.
Protect your finds: Small bags and a secure backpack prevent loss or damage.
Take care of yourself: Snacks, water, and comfortable shoes keep your energy up for hours of walking and browsing.
Trust me—these simple tools and habits can completely change your gem show experience. You’ll be able to focus on what really matters: discovering amazing stones for your jewelry creations.
Bonus Tips for Jewelry Makers
Bring a notebook or phone notes app: Sketch design ideas as you go.
Consider color and compatibility: Think about how new stones will work with your existing inventory.
Plan your route: Big shows can be massive. Having a strategy helps you hit your priority vendors first.
